Projects

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort

  • This project commenced with a Level 3 Energy Audit of the entire resort, complete with recommended actions for significant savings in energy.
  • Following the Energy Audit, Resort Management implemented low-cost, energy saving measures which resulted in a 24% reduction in energy costs.
  • Tropical Energy Solutions has also been selected to design and supply a large solar power system for Lady Elliot Island including:
    • SMA Modular Inverter System Components including webbox, interfaces and software;
    • Kyocera Multi-crystalline PV panels of 19 to 21 kWp capacity, including array wiring materials;
    • VRLA Battery Bank of 6000Ah@48V capacity (C10) including links and wiring materials;
    • Supply and installation of all signage;
    • On-site Commissioning and operator training; and
    • Assistance with funding application under the Australian Greenhouse Office RRPGP scheme.
  • We expect this project to be completed in September 2008.

Low Island System Refurbishment and Expansion

  • The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority engaged our services in 2007 for a project on Low Island in Far North Queensland. The island lies 13km off Port Douglas and is an important tourist destination which receives nearly 80 visitors a day.
  • This initially involved conducting an Energy Audit on Low Island and repairing and updating the existing photovoltaic power system.
  • The project aim was to reduce reliance on diesel generated power.
  • The generator now runs for less than 2 hours a day compared to 24 hours before Tropical Energy Solutions involvement - a 90% reduction.
  • We are continuing to work with the GBRMPA to improve this again through a design, supply and installation an extension to the existing PV system. This includes:
    • 5kWp photovoltaic panels;
    • AERL type solar regulators;
    • All wiring, breakers and conduit;
    • On-site Commissioning and operator training; and
    • Project management of PV support structure design and off-site manufacture.

Double Island Resort

  • Tropical Energy solutions has been engaged to conduct a Level 3 Energy Audit on Double Island Resort, 5km off the coast of Palm Cove, north of Cairns.
  • The Audit is currently in progress and will include:
    • on-site assessment of all electrical sources;
    • on-site data logging of all electrical loads including creation of load inventory;
    • load modeling for seasonal variations and differing operational demands; and
    • identification of site specific load reduction opportunities.
  • This project followed our consultation with the Resort owner where we discussed load reduction and hybrid off-grid power system development opportunities.

Business Education and Development

  • In being awarded this funding AusIndustry has recognised the important knowledge and skills held by Tropical Energy Solutions and the three partner companies within the project.
  • Representatives of the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research and the Mayors of Cairns and Townsville launched the project in Far North and North Queensland during April.
  • Workshops are currently being held throughout these regions and are scheduled for the Northern Territory latter this year. For more details go to: www.goinggreenbiz.com
  • Since forming for this project the partner companies have formed the Kleinhardt Sustainability and Eco-efficiency Group to meet a demand for their combined expertise on a broad range of projects.

Kewarra Beach - Proposed Lifestyle Village
  • A Lifestyle Village has been proposed by a property developer, on a greenfield site 30 minutes drive north of Cairns.
  • Tropical Energy Solutions is working with the developer to produce an Energy Strategy Report to guide the development towards compliance with the UDIA EnviroDevelopment Guidelines.
  • These guidelines are a scientific approach to allow purchasers to recognise and thereby select environmentally friendly homes and lifestyles.
